Philosophy is a vital and integral part of true martial arts. Unfortunately, it is the first thing neglected if not completely abandoned in modern society as people focus merely on the results and not the process or path inherent in the endeavor. The aim of the practice of Shorinji Kempo is twofold -- Development of the person and development of society.

Personal Development:

Doshin So (1911-1980), founded Shorinji Kempo in 1947 under his thinking: "Hito, hito, hito, subetewa hitono shitsuni aru", or "The person, the person, the person, everything depends on the quality of people." He felt that human the human condition, first and foremost had to be address at the individual level and from within each human being. He thought that the person who has the qualities of mercy, justice and valor are responsible to help others and make a better world.

Social Development:

Personal development will and should have an effect on society. All human institutions are merely a product of the people within them. By developing each person individually, that person is better able to act responsibly and decisively in their daily lives and within the organizations in which they participate. Thus, little by little, making the world a better place.
