New students are welcome on an on-going basis. Beginners are welcome, and previous martial arts experience is not necessary. Those with a background in other styles are expected to practice only Shorinji Kempo techniques while engaged in practice at the Atlanta Branch. Membership is currently limited to ages 13 and above, with concurrence of a legal guardian if under 18 (i.e., minor). However, children's classes are expected as demand arises.
All members receive personalized instruction in a friendly and non-competitive environment. New students should be in sufficient physical health to participate in moderate to vigorous physical activities. If you have any health issues or concerns, please consult your physician, as well as identify them to the Branch Master. Although attendance at all classes is not required, students are encouraged to attend as much as possible and on a regular basis. Given Shorinji Kempo's complexity, commitment to regular practice is the only way to retain information and develop skills. In addition, students must learn a specialized vocabulary of Japanese terms through the regular and routine class instructions. Students that train regularly find this manageable even if they do not have any Japanese language background.
Cost and Expectations for Practicing at the Atlanta Branch:
Monthly Fee: $50/month for two practices a week. Please note that full tuition is due every month regardless of the number of times a student can attend and tuition is not prorated.
Kids Class (ages 9 - 13): Monthly Fee $25
Please inquire about family discounts.
Registration Fee: $50.
This is a one-time fee for new student's registration with the World Shorinji Kempo Organization Headquarters and insurance for the first year.
There is a yearly recurring fee of $25, which covers insurance for subsequent years.
Students are expected to practice in the traditional white Shorinji Kempo uniform or dogi. For the first few practices for new students, t-shirt & sweat pants (or something easy to exercise in) will be acceptable. Orders for official Dogi are placed periodically by the Branch. Please consult with the Branch Master about details of the requirement. Students must own a dogi prior to testing.
We do ask everyone to sign a "Hold Harmless Agreement" (sometimes referred to as an insurance waiver) which is required for insurance and liability purposes. Forms are available from the Branch Master. Once the student's registration with WSKO is complete, an ID card will be issued from the WSKO headquarter in Japan. This will give the student the priveledge to practice with any WSKO practice location around the world. Registration with the WSKO Headquarters is a requirement.
Shorinji Kempo is taught on a not-for-profit basis and all dues and fees are used to run the day-to-day expenses of the branch. Instructions teach on a volunteer basis and are not compensated from the branch dues and fees. If you would like to practice Shorinji Kempo, but are experiencing financial hardship, please contact the Branch Master or Club Captain.
Please contact the club prior to coming to class, whether to observe or join.
