The Atlanta Shorinji Kempo Club was started by David Toone and Akitoshi Ohira in 2010.

David started Shorinji Kempo in college and has been hooked ever since. He tested and received his 3rd Dan in 2005 at the Shorinji Kempo Hombu in Japan, after which he founded the Shorinji Kempo Berkely Branch in California. He then moved to the Greater Atlanta Area in 2007 to establish his Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine clinic. He has practiced Shorinji Kempo since he was 21 and studied under Makoto Hagata Sensei, 6th Dan for over 10 years in Northern California's San Fransisco Bay Area.

Akitoshi started Shorinji Kempo in Junior High School and continued through University in Kobe, Japan. He tested and received his 2nd Dan in 1991 at the Shorinji Kempo Hombu in Japan when he was 22. He had studied under Masayoshi Arima Sensei, 7th Dan at the Nishinomita Doin. Before he started Shorinji Kempo, Akitoshi researched and observed many different Martial Arts, including Karate, Aikido and Judo, in order to select the best martial arts for him. He selected Shorinji kempo because he found it enhanced not only physical strength but also spiritual and mental strength and found the Shorinji Kempo philosophy very practical in daily life.
